safe sex sex ed sexually transmitted diseases STDs Teen Pregnancy
The area where we live, called Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles, is considered a “hot spot” for teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy rates are 2-3 times higher here than in other areas of California.
Our action plan was to reduce the amount of teenage pregnancy in the Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles area by raising safe sex awareness with high school students. We approached three high schools in the area and asked for permission to pass out pamphlets with information on safe sex. Included with the pamphlets were condoms and usage instructions. We also set up an email account where people could email and ask questions that they weren’t comfortable asking others about.
We handed out over 600 pamphlets and condoms to high school students in our area. We believe that by raising awareness about the need to have safe sex, we can help reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies and have more of our peers graduating. We know that many people are shy about asking questions about sex, so we know that the email account we set up can help be a resource for those who have additional questions not answered on the pamphlet.
We requested $900 to pay for the 600 condoms and printing for the 600 brochures we distributed.
